COVER STORY - Project BETTER PLACE

It just doesn't happen every day that you run into a company that has the potential to change the very fabric of our society. Innovative product is essential - the light bulb, Model T, telephone, TV, computers, etc - yet, it is the less glorified networks that make things actually happen. To follow the same pattern, envisioning the great-next-thing could be a singular achievement, but building a network, is fundamentally teamwork.

Uniquely for our product-focused industry, Project Better Place is all about the network building - and perhaps this is why it's so important for us all to follow this story.

Backgrounder

On January 21, 2008, the Israeli government announced that "For the first time in history, all the conditions necessary for electric vehicles to be successfully mass-marketed will be brought together in a partnership between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Project Better Place in Israel."

In essence, Renault-Nissan Alliance would supply the electric vehicles, and Project Better Place would construct and operate an Electric Recharge Grid across the entire country. The Israeli government would take care of the consumer side of the project, providing tax incentives to the willing customers. The vehicles will be available for customers in 2011.
