COVER STORY - India Rising

As tempting as it is to think this entire North American automotive mess may soon run its course, we're constantly being reminded that we have still a long way to go: The latest reports from the US economy watchers show an ever more plunging consumer confidence - now at a 75.0 points from a moderate 87.3 in January, and more worrisome, a combination of rising inflation and a weaker growth which brings us the ugly threat of "stagflation," the economic no-no unseen since the tense ‘70s. Additionally, the latest indicators points to a continuing strong loonie decidedly flirting with parity, even as, at least for now, the U.S. dollar is regaining some of its luster.

The continuing Canadian dependence on the US markets is coming increasingly under scrutiny, and despite some positive moves, the Canada-US trade is now up to 49% of the GDP. Highlighting the economic connections, IMF recently downgraded Canadian growth forecast for 2008 to a paltry 1.8%, and even that is still an open question.

From that perspective, although the latest numbers for the Canadian automotive sector may appear soothing, the previous success, even over the last several years, is statistically meaningless - which sends our politicians and business leaders scrambling for answers.

Could the booming economic regions of China, India, Russia and the Gulf states be able to provide us with the much-needed answers?
