From John Keynes to Milton Friedman: The 2008 Ontario Budget

The much-anticipated Ontario budget tabled this week, delivered a mixed bag of goodies to the province's automotive sector, besieged by Darwinian economics and the high Canadian dollar.

Highlights: The ‘Automotive' Budget
As automotive goes, several notable initiatives deserve our attention: the immediate elimination of the capital tax for manufacturing companies, which is now retroactive to Jan. 1, 2007. This latest tax relief, initially announced several months ago, was scheduled to take effect in the 2008 tax year.

Additionally, Ontario extended the 50% acceleration of depreciation for machinery and equipment purchased to the end of 2011. This measure will especially help the auto parts manufacturers who are starting to invest in modernizing their plants in order to improve their competitiveness in the current global markets.

However, the cornerstone of the budget is undoubtedly the $1.5-billion Skills to Jobs Action Plan which includes the already announced $53-million from the previous 2007-08 budget year. The funds will go directly to training programs in the auto sector, such as $25-million for the Yves Landry Foundation, another $22.8-million for Toyota's Canada's Cambridge training and research centre, and about $5.6-million for Chrysler Canada's training programs and facilities in Windsor, Etobicoke and Brampton.
