INDIA RISING - Part II

by Michael Pistol

In the last week or so, two different pieces of news reminded us of the rapidly changing automotive world we're living in: Tata's much publicized purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover, and Scotia Economics' latest Global Auto Report that alerts us to the profound West to East power shift. The two stories have one common element - India, and it's rapid rise to a global economic power status.

According to Carlos Gomes, Scotiabank Senior Economist and Auto Industry Specialist, "...it is widely recognized that emerging markets are the key to the auto industry's continued growth. However, it is not common knowledge that combined vehicle assembly capacity in the BRIC nations, Brazil, Russia, India and China, will climb to 20 million units this year surpassing the 17.4 million units of assembly capacity currently in place in North America."
