WEEKLY VIDEO: Fashion and Automobiles
Of Moore’s Law, Long Tail and ‘Free’ Cars

by Michael Pistol

Nowadays, it doesn't take much to rattle an automotive industry that's facing profound challenges. Oil at $135/barrel, fuel efficiency mandates, environmental issues and a consumer mired in debt are just few of the elements that only a few years ago would have been considered unfamiliar exotica. For North America at least, the aura of omnipotence that has enveloped the automotive institutions for the last century or so is evaporating - fast. And the last thing any auto executive would want to hear now is the talk of free cars...

If you haven't yet heard of Chris Anderson, the editor of Wired magazine and one of Time's top 100 influencers, don't worry - you will.

In no small measure, Mr. Anderson is responsible for articulating the parameters of what some may call a new economic order, based on 'freeconomics' - a set of economic rules, all based - and derived - from the now famous Moore's Law.

In very simple terms, Moore's Law stipulates "the number of transistors that can be inexpensively placed on an integrated circuit is increasingly exponentially every 18 months". The law bares the name of Intel's co-founder Gordon Moore, who in 1965 defined this trend that is expected to continue well past next several decades. For the lay person, Moore's law is most evident in two areas of our daily life - the increased processing speed and memory capacity of our computers, and the constant drop in price of accessing and using such technologies.
