WEEKLY VIDEO: GM Technology - Less oil changes
comScore – Measuring Digital Universe

by Michael Pistol

Once, there were only a few TV channels, newspapers and magazines. Then, came video, cable and satellite. Now, the Internet is the ‘thing'.
Interestingly, since these innovations came along, it becomes increasingly difficult to dispel the impression that the automotive advertisers' messages are, in many respects, lost in a sea of choices. From that perspective, a lack of choice can often be preferable to a surplus.

To complicate matters, the latest indicators suggest that economic prospects will not improve any time soon, and despite a few perennial optimists out there, a Wagnerian Strum und Drang-like atmosphere is slowly descending over the industry.

So it comes as no surprise that the Internet, as a marketing medium, is increasingly one of the rising choices for A&M departments looking for more efficient (inexpensive?) ways to reach their targeted audience.

The issues regarding the Internet as an A&M medium are more complex than let's say, the print or OOH mediums: Traffic size, demographics, timing, duration, exposure, etc, are just few of the variables that if not properly understood, will render the medium as ‘underperforming'.

Understanding Internet's capabilities vis-à-vis your company's marketing needs is certainly not an ah-ha moment, or a hoped-for easy fix. Throwing a couple of bucks at it and waiting for the 'see-what-will-happen' is a sure failure receipe.
