June 28, 2008 INTERNET RISING PART I: comSCORE MEDIA - MEASURING DIGITAL UNIVERSE

by Michael Pistol

It's human nature to look for multiple reasons to turn away an opportunity. In fact, it's proven statistics that for each one of these business novelties, a negative type will find at least three reasons not to even give it a try. Conversely, the positive types - or early adopters as we ‘re used to calling this crowd, will invariably find at least three other reasons to give it a try.

Granted, when it comes to ‘it', leaders and followers, winners or losers, are firmly and decisively on opposite sides, and when we're talking automotive advertising in Canada, the Mobile Internet is simply the most puzzling ‘it' ever.

Anecdotally, there is mounting evidence that advertising and marketing (A&M) spend per average N. American vehicle (during its entire life cycle) is far exceeding the value of labour needed to produce that particular vehicle. Hard data is not available yet, as OEMs and their agencies are keeping the cards close to the chest, but diggers are hard at work - we're told. We'll certainly keep you posted - as that's going to be a hell of story, for sure...

As it is, that huge spend is harnessed by (still) incredible business misconceptions, personal relationships, contractual obligations, and in many cases just by sheer inertia and ‘I just work here' attitudes.

As such, is the current, highly competitive state of the industry, going to change the way we look at A&M activities in Canada? Will recent technology advances, market penetration issues, consumer pressure and financial considerations, finally converge into an ah-ha moment for all the players involved?

If you think it will, keep reading. If not - exit now.
