August 29, 2008: Summer's End - Now What? Part II

by Michael Pistol

I for one, am not too pessimistic about the future, but we should remember that our industry is both highly leveraged and a cyclical one - a classic ‘long' business like banking, brokerage, housing, insurance and retail. And we all know where all that seems to be going.

With that in mind, aside from what we've discussed already, here are some observations related to some additional issues that we'll most likely have to deal with in the next few months.

Diesel Politics

At the consumer level, diesel technology always generated a polarizing debate populated by bombastic arguments from the well-thumbed pro and contra playbooks. The perennial Canadian players, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are about the get new company - the heavyweight BMW, and that indeed will tend to add more credibility to the pro camp. The two new products - the BMW 335d and X5 xDrive35d models will showcase the company's 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel engine with Variable Twin Turbo Technology.
