Surviving Skills for a Recession - Part III: MARITZ Canada Inc.

As last week’s Detroit drama devolved in the most unimaginable cliffhanger, it’s clear that the fortune is out of next year's auto sales cookies: The just-in-time help from the White House will last probably just until the end of January, good enough to avoid a miserable Christmas but not cheery enough to send the Grinch packing. So far, the outlook is as bleak as it could get: At the end of November, IHS Global Insight was already talking of a 12-million market in the US. Now, we’re hearing rumors of a 10-million market, if we’re lucky. If these predictions come true, the rest of the industry would be virtually unrecognizable.

The Canadian automotive landscape is also facing powerful headwinds, and aside the assembly sector, the dealerships are going to be severely hit. If you still think otherwise, you need help. Fast.

According to the latest Financial System Review for December 2008, released by the Bank of Canada at the end of the week, the Canadian household balance sheets are under increased ‘pressure’, which “could result in a substantial increase in default rates on household debt.”
Additionally, BoC says that we should expect “significant tightening of lending conditions for both households and businesses that would exacerbate weakness in the economy.” After mortgages, the auto industry is the most leveraged Canadian economic sector, and this is hardly what you want to hear from your central bank - isn’t it?

So it comes as no surprise that - depending to the OEM you belong to - dealership staff’s psychological state fluctuates somewhere between generally gloomy and absolute desperation.

Yet, these times could be easily seen as times of great opportunity – that is, if you make it to the other end of the recession.

Which brings us, once again to MOC Distributors of Canada Inc. and its one-of-a kind managing director, Mr. Al Manji.
